The phase-I of rules and regulations of IRS governing the construction and classification of Indian Coast Guard ship along with provisional rules for Coast Guard Air Cushion Vehicles (ACVs) was launched on 05 Aug 08 by Director General, Indian Coast Guard.
A rule committee of officers from Indian Coast Guard and IRS was set up in Jan 08 with an overall objective to develop the specific rules applicable for construction and classification of ICG ships and ACVs.
The phase-I of rules consists of following parts:-
(a) Part 1 General Regulations (b) Part 2 Manufacture, testing & certification of Materials (c) Part 3 General hull requirement (d) Part 4 General requirements for main and auxiliary Machinery (e) Part 5 General requirements for electrical installations and control engineering (f) Part 6 Special class notation
Regular interaction between CG Rule Committee and IRS, is expected to result in developing rules for areas not covered under phase-I rules and continual improvement/updation of the phase-I rules, will go in achieving global standards in ship construction and certification.
A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was also signed on 05 Aug 08 between ICG and IRS as a strategic partnership between the two organisations to optimally utilize each other capabilities. The MoU envisages co-operation in areas of activities related to ship construction and certification, inspection and certification of material and machinery etc.
