ICGS Sankalp, the 5th Advanced Offshore Patrol Vessel (AOPV) of the Indian Coast Guard was commissioned at Goa by Shri AK Antony, Hon’ble Raksha Mantri on 20 May 08 in the presence of Vice Admiral RF Contractor, AVSM NM, Director General Indian Coast Guard and other senior dignitaries of the Central and State Govt. 'Sankalp' meaning "Determination" is a projection of Indian Coast Guard's will and motivation to “Strive for Excellence”.
The Advanced Offshore Patrol Vessel, ICGS Sankalp, 5th of its class has been designed and built indigenously by M/s Goa Shipyard Limited. The ship, which is equipped with the most advanced and sophisticated navigational and communication sensors and equipment, is capable of embarking the Twin Engine Helicopter (ALH). The special features of the ship include an Integrated Bridge System (IBS), Integrated Machinery Control System (IMCS), high power External Fire Fighting System and two indigenously built Gun Mounts. The "Infra Red Surveillance System” to be installed onboard will be an additional capability for the ship's crew to detect targets in the night that otherwise evade radar detection due to their small size or higher sea state. The ship is designed to carry one twin engine helicopter and five high speed boats for Search & Rescue, maritime law enforcement, EEZ surveillance, high speed interdiction and marine pollution response missions.
The ship is 105 meters long with GRT of 2300 tons and is propelled by 8000hp twin diesel engines to a maximum speed of 25 knots. It has an endurance of 6500 nautical miles and is an ideal platform for extended deployments at sea without any replenishment, thereby living upto CG motto - “ Vayam Rakshamah - We Protect”. The sustenance and reach coupled with the most modern weapons, sensors and communication system, provides her the capabilities of performing the role of command platform for the conduct of all Coast Guard operations in high seas and close to the coast.
ICGS Sankalp, manned by 12 officers and 94 men under the command of DIG K S Sheoran, TM, will be based at Mumbai. The ship would operate under the administrative and operational control of the Commander, Coast Guard Region (West), Mumbai.
The ship on joining Coast Guard Fleet will be deployed extensively for the EEZ surveillance and such other duties as enshrined in Coast Guard Charter. To further augment the existing force level and bolster operational prowess, one more AOPV, 03 Pollution Control Vessels (PCVs), 05 Inshore Patrol Vessels (IPVs) and 11 Interceptor Boats (IBs) are under various stages of construction at the Indian Shipyards and would be inducted into the Coast Guard Fleet between 2007 to 2009. |
