INDO-JAPAN COAST GUARD COMBINED EXERCISE

      Japan Coast Guard Ship Shikishima visited Mumbai (21-26 Nov 06) to participate in Indo-Japan Coast Guard Combined Exercise (SAHYOG – KAIJIN 2006) off Mumbai.

      The joint exercise  was conducted on 24 Nov 06 to promote co-operation and co-ordination between Indian Coast Guard and Japan Coast Guard with a view to enhance mutual capabilities and practice joint working procedures for search and rescue operations, combating piracy,  and casualty evacuation at sea for safer seas. A friendly football match between ICG and JCG team also conducted on 23 Nov 06.

     On completion of joint exercise, a High Level Discussion Between Commandant JCG and DGICG was held. A  Memorandum of Cooperation (MoC) was signed on 24 Nov 06 by DGICG and Commandant JCG for the establishment of collaborative relationship to combat crimes at sea and develop regional co-operation between Indian Coast Guard and Japan Coast Guard.

The salient features of MoC are as follows:-   

      (i)   Sharing information on preventing and responding to acts of crimes at sea such as piracy, armed robbery, maritime violence and crimes, acts against maritime security, drug trafficking, smuggling and illegal migration at sea and protection of marine environment.

      (ii)   Carrying out search and rescue operations at sea.

   (iii)   Exchange of information and facilitation of technical assistance on combating marine pollution.

     (iv)   Exchange of technical assistance, wherever feasible, for taking preventive and protective measures for addressing natural disaster like tsunamis and super cyclones.
