SPS Basra, YSM, PTM, TM

 

 

Inspector General Surinder Pal Singh Basra is from the first batch of Coast Guard Officers and joined service on 07 Feb 1980. The officer is a specialist in Navigation and Direction and has undergone training in Oceanography under the aegis of the International Oceanography Institute. The officer has also undergone Senior Defence Management Course at College of Defence Management Secunderabad.

 

The Flag Officer graduated from the Defence Services Staff College at Wellington, India, in 1990 and has held various important afloat and ashore appointments. These include Commands of Interceptor Boat C-01, Inshore Patrol Vessel Ahalya Bai, Offshore Patrol Vessel Varaha and Coast Guard Training Ship Varuna. His important ashore appointments include Regional Operations and Plans Officer at Coast Guard Regional Headquarters (A & N), Port Blair, Deputy Director (Operations) at Coast Guard Headquarters, Chief Staff Officer (Operations) at Regional Headquarters (East), Director (MPR&T), Director (Personnel) and  Director (Operations) at Coast Guard Headquarters. As Director (Operations), the Flag Officer represented India at the   International Maritime Organisation and was involved in finalisation of the International Ship Port Security Code. He has also been instrumental in setting up the Ship Reporting System, INDSAR, in India and in setting up of dedicated Rescue Co-ordination Centres for the Indian Coast Guard.

 

As the Regional Commander of the Coast Guard Region (A & N), the Flag Officer was instrumental in steering the Coast Guard forces in the Andaman & Nicobar Islands on        26 Dec 04 to combat the tsunami disaster and mobilize the scarce resources in a professional and business like manner which resulted in efficient rescue and relief operations.

 

Promoted to the rank of Inspector General on 31 Oct 05, he was the first regular CG officer to take over as the Deputy Director General at CGHQ. The Flag Officer  served as  Regional Commander of the Eastern Region with effect from 04 Feb 08 during his previous appointment.

 

The Flag Officer took over the reins of the Western seaboard as the Regional Commander on 09 Sep 09.

 

The Flag Officer is a recipient of the prestigious Yuddh Seva Medal (YSM), President Tatrakshak Medal (PTM) and Tatrakshak Medal (TM) for meritorious and distinguished service.

 

  The Inspector General is married to Mrs. Harkiran Basra, They have 01 daughter and 01 son.
