CASUALTY EVACUATION FROM RESEARCH VESSEL

PROFESSOR KURENTSOV - 05 MAY 2006

     On 05 May 2006 at about 1000 Hrs, a request was received by Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (Chennai) from M/s Bakshi & Company, Chennai for medical evacuation of one Russian crew member from research vessel Professor Kurentsov (IMO No.7406136) in position about 180 nautical miles North East of Port Blair.  The patient (Mr Kurochkin Vetaly, 44 yrs) had injured his right hand and was severely infected.

     On receipt of the information,  Indian Coast Guard Ship Kanaklata Barua sailed from Port Blair on 05 May 06 for casualty evacuation of the injured crew.  The ship arrived the area and transferred the patient onboard at about 0515 hrs on 06 May 06.  The patient was brought to Port Blair at about 1400 hrs on 06 May 06 and handed over to the local agents who later admitted him to GB Pant Hospital, Port Blair.  The condition of the patient is reported to be stable.

 

MEDEVAC OF PATIENT FROM MERCHANT VESSEL EUROPA - 02 MAY 2006

      On 02 May 2006 at about 1450 Hrs, request was received by Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (Mumbai) from a passenger liner MV Europa for Medical evacuation of one Germen crew off Agatti island (Lakshadweep Islands).  The patient, Mr Hausdorf Michael had suffered brain stroke and was reported to be bleeding profusely.  The Bahamas registered vessel transiting from Kochi to Mumbai was on a scheduled visit to Agatti island.

     On receipt of the information,  the vessel was advised to transfer the patient along with a medical attendant to Agatti airport.  Meanwhile,  Indian Coast Guard Dornier aircraft was launched from Kochi at about 1635 hrs on 02 May 06 to airlift the patient from Agatti island.  The patient was embarked onboard the  ICG aircraft and brought to Kochi at about 1935 hrs for immediate medical treatment.  The patient is hospitalised in Lakeshore Hospital,  Kochi by the agents of the vessel. A precious life has been saved by the timely effort of  the Indian Coast Guard.

MEDEVAC OF PATIENT FROM MERCHANT VESSEL TIGER SPIRIT - 01 MAY 2006

   On 01 May 2006 at about 1500 Hrs, request was received by Coast Guard District Headquarters - 8, Haldia from M/s Bengal Tiger line India Pvt.Ltd., Kolkata for Medical evacuation of one Romanian crew in position 44NM South East of Sagar Island (Haldia). The patient, Mr Pavel Dumitreu had suffered low blood pressure with severe vomiting.

     On receipt of the information,  the Indian Coast Guard Ship Sucheta Kripalani on patrol was tasked for medical evacuation.  The Ship arrived the area and transferred the patient onboard at about 1900 hrs on 01 May 2006.  The Indian Coast Guard ship entered  Haldia  Harbour with  the evacuated patient at about 1030 hrs on 02 May 2006 for handing over the patient to the agent  for specialised treatment. The condition of the patient is reported to be stable.

MEDICAL ASSISTANCE - MV SEABOURN SPIRIT 15 APR 2005

   On 15 Apr 06 at about 0810 hrs, Indian Coast Guard Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre, Mumbai received a request from shipping agent in Mumbai M/s JM Baxi & Co. for medical evacuation from        MV Seabourn Spirit, a passenger liner in position 117 NM south of Porbandar.  The patient had suffered  heart attack.

    On receipt of information, Indian Coast Guard Ship C-141 with a doctor embarked sailed from Porbandar.  The doctor provided the required first aid to the patient and brought him to Porbandar for handing over to local agent.  The patient was subsequently admitted at hospital at Rajkot  for specilised treatment.   The condition of the patient is reported to be stable.  A precious life has been saved by the timely effort of the Coast Guard.

 

 
MEDEVAC OF MASTER OF MV BRITISH LAUREL -07 JUL 2005

MEDEVAC off Quilon (Kerala)

      On 07 Jul 2005 at about 1630 Hrs, request was received by Indian Coast Guard Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC), Mumbai for evacuation of the master of Motor Tanker British Laurel reportedly in serious condition after suffering a stroke about 65 miles west of Quilon (Kerala).

     Maritime Rescue Sub-Centre (MRSC), Kochi  coordinated the medical evacuation. The local shipping agent of the vessel M/s GAC Shipping Pvt Ltd, Kochi was contacted and advised to standby with medical assistance by AM 08 Jul 2005.

      ICG helicopter was launched at 0610 hrs on 08 Jul 2005 from Kochi. The patient was evacuated from the vessel by the helicopter and handed over to the local agent at 0630 hrs on 08 Jul 2005. The patient underwent medical treatment at Medical Trust hospital, Kochi and his condition is stable.

MEDEVAC OF PATIENT FROM PHILIPPINES MERCHANT TANKER MT KAIMON - 05 JUL 2005

      On 05 Jul 2005 at about 1840 Hrs, request was received by Coast Guard District Headquarters, Goa from M/s SDS Shipping Ltd, Goa, the agents of merchant tanker MT Kaimon about a patient suffering from appendicitis requiring urgent medical evacuation while on passage from Philippines to Kuwait.

     The ship was directed by the ICG to head close to Marmagao Port for evacuation of the patient by helicopter. ICG helicopter was launched at about 0600 hrs on 06 Jul 2005 and the patient was evacuated from the ship eight miles west of Grandi Island , Goa. The patient has been handed over to the agents and admitted into Vintage Hospital, Panjim for medical treatment. The condition of the evacuated crew is stable.

MEDEVAC OF PATIENT FROM FRENCH MERCHANT VESSEL

Medevac off Murud Janjira

      On 24 Apr 2005 at about 1500 Hrs, information was received from MRCC(France) requesting medical evacuation of an injured crew from a French Vessel MV ILE DE BATZ in position about 78 nautical miles South West of Murud Janjira.
      MRCC Mumbai directed ICGS Kamladevi to proceed with despatch for medical evacuation. The ship affected rendezvous with the merchant vessel at 0245hrs on 25 Apr 2005 and the injured crew (with fractured wrist) was taken onboard.

    Ship arrived off Mumbai at 0945hrs on 25 Apr 2005  and transferred the patient for treatment to Breach Candy Hospital. The patient's condition is reported to be stable.    


MEDEVAC OF SWISS NATIONAL FROM THAI YACHT
IN ANDAMAN SEA - 23 MAR 2005

      On 23 Mar 2005 at about 1900 Hrs, The Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) Port Blair received an information regarding medical distress on board a Thai Yacht.   The Vessel was reported to be 2 NM north of Button Island (40 NM North-East of Port Blair) and one crew, Ms Gloggner Renate (Swiss nationality) was reported to have medical emergency after conducting diving operations.
 

Reacting to the situation, MRCC Port Blair diverted ICGS Kanaklata Barua for casualty evacuation. Another Island cargo vessel operating in the vicinity, MV Katchal was also diverted to the scene. ICGS Kanaklata Barua  arrived at the distress position at 0100 Hrs on 24 Mar 2005. The patient was embarked on board along with an escort and emergency medical aid provided.


    

    Therafter the ship proceeded at maximum speed and entered Port Blair Harbour at 0600 Hrs on 24 Mar 2005. The patient was admitted in the local hospital for treatment and is recovering.


MEDEVAC OFF KOCHI BY INDIAN COAST GUARD HELO

    On 13 Dec 2004, a Merchant Vessel MT Regulus Voyager whilst on passage to Los Angeles was transiting off the Coast of India and had a medical emergency on board. The ship reported a crew suffering from cardiac condition, requiring emergency evacuation.
     Maritime Rescue Sub Centre(Kochi) assumed co-ordination of the mission and activated rescue operation. An Indian Coast Guard helicopter was launched for medevac whilst the ship was asked to close the Coast of Kochi. A Coast Guard vessel ICGS Rajkamal was sailed out for SAR cover in the area.The patient was successfully air lifted by the ICG helo and brought to Port Trust Hospital of Kochi. The Doctors have reported that the patinet is recovering and his condition is stable.
MEDEVAC BY COAST GUARD OFF KOCHI

    On 24 Sep, MV Knud Maersk while on passage from Tanjun Pelapang(Indonesia) to Port Salalah(Oman) had a medical emergency on board where one of its crew Mr Hans Pontoppidan needed evacuation. The ship was off Kochi, Coast of India. The Maritime Rescue Sub Centre, Kochi co-ordinated the MEDEVAC.Coast Guard assets were pressed into service while the ship closed the Indian Coast. A CG Helicopter evacuated the patient from the ship at 1700 hrs and brought him to awaiting ambulance. He was then hospitalised at Amrita Medical Institute of Sciences for further treatment.  
MEDEVAC OF INJURED MAN FROM OIL TANKER

    On 22 Sep at 1430 hrs the Master of an Oil Tanker M/T German Sun on passage from Fujirah(UAE) to Singapore, contacted Coast Guard authorities of New Mangalore and reported injury to a crew member requiring his medical evacuation. A Coast Guard boat C-132 was sailed from New Mangalore to R/V the ship which was directed to close the Indian Coast.
The patient was evacuated from the vessel, brought into harbour and shifted to awaiting ambulance. He was then taken to AJ Hospital where reconstructive surgery was conducted. The situation was being closely monitored by the Coast Guard and the ship's local agents.
   

MEDEVAC FROM MV ANATOLY KOLESNI_CHENKO

C-131 on rescue mission

      At 2040 Hrs on 18 Aug 2004, MRCC Mumbai received a message from the Master of MV Anatoly Kolesni Chenko a Russian flag vessel, requesting medical evacuation of a crew who had severed his left hand in an accident onboard . There was no doctor onboard and the patient was bleeding profusely.  

MRSC New Mangalore assumed coordination and Coast Guard Craft C-131 was sailed for medical evacuation. On ship's entering inner harbour at 0200 hrs the patient was evacuated and taken to AJ Hospital at Mangalore in a Coast Guard ambulance.

   In a constructive surgery carried out on the patient for 12 hours, the hand was surgically attached, successfully. The Coast Guard personnel also donated blood for the patient.

MEDEVAC BY INDIAN COAST GUARD HELICOPTER

       On 13 Jul 04 at about 1215 hrs Indian Coast Guard Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC),  Mumbai received a MEDVAC request from MRCC Falmouth (United Kingdom) for an injured crew onboard a merchant vessel MV Teign Bank. The vessel was transiting from Malaysia to France. At the time of reporting vessel was 480 nautical miles South West off Kochi with an injured Russian crew member. The injured crew had sustained serious cut injuries on the back of his left knee in an accident onboard ship at high seas. The patient was bleeding profusely and was required to be evacuated to a hospital ashore.
        MRCC(Mumbai) assumed coordination and immediately initiated Coast Guard M-SAR(Maritime Search and Rescue). The vessel was directed to approach toward Kochi so as to effect an evacuation using Indian Coast Guard helicopter. Constant communication was maintained with the master of the vessel and medical advise was provided over the telephone.
        The patient was evacuated safely at 1730 hrs on 14 Jul 04 by CG 803 when the vessel was ten nautical miles West off Kochi. The patient was thereafter admitted to a civil hospital at Kochi with assistance of the company’s local agent and local police. The condition of the patient was later stated to be stable.

MEDEVAC FROM MV IRAN DEYANT

       Coast Guard Maritime Rescue Co-ordination Centre (MRCC), Mumbai received an information about a patient onboard suffering from acute abdominal pain on 05 Jul 04. The name of the vessel was reported to be MV Iran Deyant and she was enroute to Tianjin in China from Bandar Abbas.
        According to the information the vessel was about 15 miles South West of Mumbai. Reacting to the urgent nature of the distress, one helicopter ex-842 Sqn (CG) was immediately launched from Mumbai and the patient was evacuated. The patient was admitted in Byculla Messina hospital and his condition was later reported to be stable.

MEDEVAC FROM MV CHINA STAR
- 30 MAR 2004
 
      At 1202 hrs on 30 Mar 04 a VHF (wireless) call was received from Mormugao Signal Station, Goa for medical evacuation/urgent medical assistance to one Philippine National crew (able seaman) of MV China Star in position 28 Nautical Miles West of Goa port. The patient was reported to be in serious condition owing to neck injury. A Coast Guard interceptor Craft C-133 which was on routine patrol off Goa was diverted to render assistance. C-133 intercepted the vessel at 1400 hrs and carried out safe evacuation of the patient and entered Goa Shipyard Jetty at 1425 hrs. Thereafter the patient was sent to INHS Jeevanti for immediate medical first aid and later transferred to Govt hospital. During the entire SAR operation effective co-ordination was carried out with the MPT /Mumbai Agent/Goa Local Agent/Immigration department/Goa Police which resulted in timely evacuation.
