The Regional Headquarters of Coast Guard, Andaman & Nicobar Region is located at Port Blair. Presently the Region is commanded by Inspector General SP Sharma, TM. The Coast Guard has a force level of one OPV, two FPVs, three IPVs, one Dornier aircraft and two Chetak helicopters in the region. |

Assistance in Scientific Research in Barren Island |
|
|
Barren Island, an active volcano in Asia, is among the most important tourist spots in Andaman & Nicobar Group of Island. The last eruption had taken place in the year 2004. The lava from the eruption attracts scientists and people for research in this field. On 02 Apr 2008, ICGS Bhikhaiji Cama embarked 04 scientists for carrying out scientific field work at Barren Island. On reaching the landmark, the team was safely landed on the Island. Ship’s officers and men also undertook a trekking expedition on the challenging terrains in the proximity of the smoldering volcanic slopes of Barren. On completion, the scientists were brought back to Port Blair. |

Operation Sahayata |
|

Operation Sahayata was initiated for searching a Sri Lankan Fishing Boat MFV Sea Life -3 in distress at sea and has added another feather in the cap of Indian Coast Guard in endeavour to provide safe and secure maritime environment in the South East Asian region. The crew of the distressed Sri Lankan fishing boat departed Mirissa village, Sri Lanka for fishing on 27 Mar 2008. Boat developed a nagging engine failure with discharged batteries rendering the boat adrift, unlit and unable to communicate. The boat and the crew thereof were helplessly drifting in the area requiring urgent help from any possible quarters. On receiving message Operation Sahayata was initiated by RHQ (A&N) and ICGS Bhikhaiji Cama sailed for providing necessary assistance along with Coast Guard Dornier Ex- 745 Sqn (CG). The boat was located at 1245 hours on 12 Apr 08 about 390 nautical mile from North Point Light (Port Blair) . Ships technical team successfully made the engines of MFV Sea Life -3 operational using in-house capabilities and also carried out necessary repairs on shaft seal. The drained batteries were also adequately recharged. Subsequently ICGS Vajra also arrived in position and escorted the boat for safe passage to Srilanka. |

CASEVAC - Havldar Devaki Nandan on 08 April 08 |

745 Sqn (CG) undertook a CASEVAC sortie to Kolkata on 08 April 2008. Havaldar Devkai Nandan (14584871 –F) suffered a serious injury on left hand and the left hand thumb was seriously damaged. Coast Guard Dornier took off at 0920 hrs and air lifted the patient from Carnic to Port Blair. The patient was further air lifted to Kolkata at 1245 hrs and transferred to CH (Kolkata) in stable condition. |

“BHARAT NIRMAN” at Car Nicobar – 07 to 09 APR 08 |

BHARAT NIRMAN is a government initiative, which was undertaken at Car Nicobar from 07 – 09 Apr 08 to apprise the masses of the islanders. The focus was to apprise the people about the various welfare measures as well as security measures being undertaken from time to time for fast development while providing them better platform for job avenues. It was inaugurated by Shri Samsher K Shareef, Chief Secretary, Port Blair on 07 Apr 08. Coast Guard Regional Headquarter (A&N) took active part in the event by demonstrating the latest technology in the field of Search and Rescue, pollution response, medical evacuation, etc. to provide timely relief to the islanders. People took keen interest in knowing more about the role of Coast Guard and its charter of duties. There were plenty of questions by the youth to know how to join Indian Coast guard and the same was explained by the personnel manning the stall by various photo board depicting the activities undertaken by RHQ(A&N) and handouts distributed to the people. The inquisitiveness of masses to know more about Coast Guard was well appreciated by Lt Gen Bhopinder Singh, Lieutenant Governor and Honorable Member of Parliament Shri Manoranjan Bhakta. |

Community Interaction at Campbell Bay – 19 Apr 08 |

Campbell Bay is the southern most part of India which is mainly connected by the sea routes. This being of strategic importance; many government offices exist in Campbell Bay. Coast Guard ships and aircrafts undertake patrolling in and around these island to provide supports in terms of SAR, Medical, logistic etc. in the true sprits of its motto ‘We Protect’. During the recent deployment Indian Coast Guard Ship Lakshmi Bai utilized the valuable time in interacting with various administrative Officials and local residents settled by Government in rehabilitation camps. By educating the masses about various preventive measures to be adopted during disasters one can limit the loss of human life to a greater extent and reduces the involvement of government agencies in many folds. The crew of ICGS Lakshmi Bai conducted a community interaction camp for local people comprising mainly of fishermen. The participants got the first hand opportunity to don the life jackets and other life saving equipments such as SART, EPIRB. They were also apprised about the toll free number available for timely intimation for immediate assistance. These all initiatives go a long way in reducing the loss of life and property at sea. Also ship’s medical assistant apprised them about various diseases and there preventive measures. Handbooks were distributed to local people about the diseases prevalent in these islands. The effort and initiative by the Coast Guard was well appreciated by the local people. |
